I bought an 870 early this year for my first turkey season. I'm wondering how it would be to hunt deer with. I applied for a few hunts that are muzzle or shotgun only. I have the model that will shoot 2 3/4, 3, & 3 1/2 and the magnum. My question is, would I need a special barrel just for slugs or could I just use mine with an open choke?? The choke mine came with is Mod. and obviously i have an full from turkey season. Hunting in the mountains of TN. Go VOLS!

What kind of slugs are you shooting? If you are shooting sabots or any kind of "special" slug(like with the ballistic tip)then you are supposed to have a rifled barrel... I know people that use bird barrels to slug hunt. There's no problems with that. It's similar to shooting a smooth bore, but with a rib and a bead. That is how I picture it... Ive seen people shoot slugs with a modified choke through a bird barrel...if you don't want to get a cylinder or IC choke, the modified is not a problem. At least that's what the local gunsmith said....I just wouldn't put the full choke in... Here are some examples of what I meant by a "special" slug... Hope it helps... Colton...

Yeah, I wouldn't use the full. It would probably explode on me or something. I actually have no idea what type of slug I would use. I mainly just wanted to know if i needed some other type of choke or barrel altogether. Thanks for the response. Hunting in the mountains of TN. Go VOLS!

turkey terror is right on target... there are slugs made for rifled barrels and slugs made for smooth barrels... make sure you shoot the right slug out of the right barrel.... shooting a smooth bird barrel w/ mod choke about the max distance you can expect to get good accuracy is 75 yds or so... but it will kill deer just fine. the good news is, for the 870, you can pick up a rifled slug barrel for cheap and w/ a scope have a 150 - 200 yard slug gun... one last thing, be advised that a 3.5" magnum slug will kick you into next week... be prepared. yea it prolly would... and a 3 1/2" slug is not even necessary...ive seen deer killed at 150, 175 yards with a 2 3/4" slug in a rifled barrel... Colton...
